We teach a variety of fencing techniques.

A Variety of weapons and sources

We teach techniques from a variety of fencing masters from across Europe for several different styles of sword. Our main focus is the Longsword however we do also enjoy fencing with Sword and Buckler and Sabre and pitting one against another.. They do say variety is the spice of life!

LONGSWORD

We mainly teach from Joachim Meyer's The Art of Combat 1570 and his Art of Sword Combat 1569. We do also look at other fencing masters such as Fiore dei Liberi and Lichetenauer.

The longsword is often portrayed as a large heavy weapon which takes big muscles to use, this is not the case at all.

SWORD AND BUCKLER

We use The Complete Renaissance Swordsman - Antonio Manciolion 1531 and Medievel Combat in Colour - Hans Talahoffer 1467 as instructional sources for our Sword and Buckler Training.

Sword and Buckler is a lot of fun. The small shield is surprisingly very good at providing protection whilst you attack with the sword.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is there an age restriction?

Yes at the minute we only accept people aged 18+

Do you have to be fit?

No you don't need to be fit but it helps

Does it hurt?

It is a club rule that we must look after each other when training. Like any other martial art or combat sport, you are learning how to attack someone and defend yourself, at Basingstoke HEMA, this is mainly done with sword so it is important to be as safe as we can. Accidents do happen and we do everything we can to mitigate these risks, but it must be understood there is a risk. The most you are likely to suffer is a bruise.

Do I need to buy equipment?

To start with you don't need to buy anything. We will provide you with some equipment so that you can start to train and learn. If you decide this is something you wish to progress with then you will need to purchase some safety equipment which we can help guide you.

Are the swords metal?

We use a variety of training equipment which is specifically designed for the HEMA. Some of the swords you will use are made from Polypropylene. We also use Steel swords, these are designed to be as close as possible to historic training swords for length and weight. They have rounded edges and tips for safety. On rare occasion we use a sharp sword for cutting practice.

Are you insured?

Yes the club has Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance. All members are provided with Public Liability and Personal Accident insurance as part of the Annual Membership.
